for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, harp, piano, violin, and cello with light bulb conductor, 2018
performed by Ensemble Proton Bern
This piece uses light signals to cue improvisation, reimagining the visual language between conductor and ensemble. Based on Lawrence Mark's formative studies on cross-modality, the conductor’s light cues are at once transparent and cryptic. They prompt the players to depart from the notated material and make it their own. In doing so, the players must enact a definition of acceptance: taking something for what it is, but twisting, interpreting, interpolating it.
